Diesel Exhaust Fluid Information

February 2nd, 2018 by

Since 2010, certain trucks and SUVs have been using Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), which is a non-hazardous solution that breaks down dangerous NOx emissions from your exhaust into harmless nitrogen and water.

Due to government regulations, your Land Rover won’t start if it runs out of DEF, which is why it’s important to follow the alerts on your dashboard when it comes time to refill it.

While drivers are able to refill DEF themselves, it’s easy to make an appointment online with our Land Rover service center serving Benton if you want to let the experts handle it.

  4. Scroll down to select Diesel Exhaust Fluid (Next Service on some models).

What Happens If I Run Out of DEF?

If you run out of DEF, your car will be unable to start after you switch the engine off. The DEF tank will need to be refilled with 3.6L of DEF, or two standard sized non-drip bottles.

Should this happen to you in the middle of a road trip and you’re stuck on the side of the road, Benton area drivers can use Land Rover’s Roadside Assistance Program for those vehicles that are still under warranty.

Can I Refill The DEF Tank Myself?

If you find yourself unable to move your car or just don’t feel like going to a service center, you can fill up the DEF tank yourself. Simply locate the DEF reservoir cap, pictured below, twist it off counter-clockwise, and fit the mouth of the DEF bottle onto the mouth of the reservoir. Once it is secure, push down on the base of the bottle until the fluid is drained totally into the tank.

Make sure to never use DEF pumps for commercial vehicles at gas stations, as the flow rate is too high and will damage your vehicle’s DEF tank.

Is DEF Hazardous?

While DEF is non-hazardous, proper precautions should be taken according to advice on the packaging if it comes into contact with any part of your body. It will stain clothing and upholstery, so be sure to clean it immediately using cold water and a damp cloth if it is spilt.

How Should I Store DEF?

Every DEF bottle has a label with manufacturer’s storage and handling recommendations. Always store it in its original container, and be sure to never store it inside your vehicle to protect it from fluctuating temperatures.
